Secret Spy Journey

Rate this:  4/5

Requires about 1 Day to 29 Days | All ages

Use postcards to provide evidence that you have traveled to some exotic or mysterious location.

  • Postcards or cardstock cut to postcard size (4.25” x 6”)

  • Postage Stamps (the more exotic, the better. Ask your post office for their featured selections)
  • Pen
  • Photos of where you plan to go
  • Glue or paste

Pick a city anywhere in the world where you would be interested in going. Research this location and make notes. Locate pictures of this city.

Determine how many postcards you want to send. (3 is good for a start.)

Glue imagery of your location to the front (image side) of the postcard, so as to cover up the original picture. Make sure that your added material does not go beyond the edges of the original postcard.

Plan out your messages. For instance, if you are going to Australia, keep in mind that Australia's seasons are the opposite of ours. So that when we are having summer, it’s winter down there!

For the first card you may want to talk about the city you arrived in and what the temperature/weather was. (This information can be found easily online.) Example: "Weather here in Melbourne, Australia is hot and sunny. They use a different scale for measuring temperatures here. It says it is only 24 degrees, but it feels very hot. This is their summer."

Mail the cards to your Dad or friend. He can also mail cards to you from his secret journey. As your adventure continues, add to the details of your journey. You may even begin to outline a treasure hunt or riddle for the recipient to solve. Mail cards on different days so that they arrive on different days.

  • Mail from overseas can take a long time to reach us, so it’s okay if you’re already back home when the cards arrive.
  • Consider setting up code names with your Dad. For instance, your Dad could be Agent 42 (42 being his age). His card could be addressed to "Agent 42, c/o your address," and signed "Agent 10-1/2." (Guess who that is?)

  • A great way to get imagery is to photocopy it out of a library book.
  • Google image search is another great source of location imagery. For instance, if you wanted pictures of Washington, DC, there are all kinds of photos you can download and print.
  • Consider writing your messages in a secret code so that no one else can read them.
